Brushing with Braces

Tips to keep your teeth clean and plaque-free during orthodontic care.

Orthodontic Oral Care Guidance

Orthodontic braces create small gaps and crevices where food particles easily get trapped, leading to rapid plaque buildup. While braces align your teeth, they also act as a foundation for bacteria if oral hygiene is neglected. Maintaining clean teeth is vital to prevent permanent staining or decay once braces are removed.

Steps for Brushing with Braces

  • Rinse First: Rinse your mouth with water before brushing to loosen any food trapped in the brackets.
  • Brush Above & Below Brackets: Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle and brush the gumline above the brackets, then brush the undersides of the brackets at an upward angle.
  • Brush Every Bracket: Clean each bracket individually with a circular motion. A specialized orthodontic brush or interdental brush can help clean under the wires.
  • Replace Brush More Frequently: The metal brackets wear down toothbrush bristles quickly. Be prepared to replace your brush or brush-heads every 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Floss Diligently: Use a floss threader or water flosser to slide dental floss under the archwires and clean between your teeth daily.
