How to Brush Teeth

Learn the fundamentals of proper brushing for maximum protection.

Proper Brushing Fundamentals

Brushing teeth is something that all of us do every day, but many people still do not brush their teeth correctly. Having the right technique ensures you remove plaque effectively without damaging your gums.

Correct Brushing Technique

  1. Angle the Brush: Do not hold the toothbrush flat against your teeth. Hold it at a 45-degree angle pointing toward the gumline.
  2. Gentle Circular Motions: Move the brush back and forth gently in short, circular strokes. Do not scrub back and forth violently, as plaque is soft and easily removed, whereas harsh scrubbing can cause receding gums.
  3. Clean All Surfaces: Brush the outer surfaces, the inner surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of all teeth. To clean the inside of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make vertical strokes.
  4. Brush Your Tongue: Gently brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.
  5. Brush for Two Minutes: Spend a full two minutes brushing. Most people brush for less than a minute. Divide your mouth into four quadrants and spend 30 seconds on each.

Toothbrush and Toothpaste Selection

Only a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste is required. Always use an ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste, as fluoride helps strengthen enamel and reverse early cavities. Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months, or sooner if the bristles become frayed. A soft-bristled brush is highly recommended to protect your gums.
